Genes may determine that some people develop severe forms of COVID-19
An international study describes that the vulnerability of certain people to the development of severe clinical forms in SARS-COV-2 virus infection may be influenced by their genetic characteristics. This collaborative work has included the participation of CIBER in its Liver and Digestive Diseases (CIBEREHD) area, as well as Respiratory Diseases (CIBERES) and the CIBER of Epidemiology and Public Health (CIBERESP).

A world consortium to study the genetic factors associated with COVID-19
COVID-19 has caused a global pandemic and this in turn has accelerated the formation of international collaborations more than ever, although they are already common in biomedical research. The COVID-19 Host Genetics Initiative was formed to share knowledge and data to study the role of genetic factors in susceptibility to infection by SARS-CoV-2 and severity of the disease. The GCAT-Genomes for Life Project at the IGTP is taking part. The methodology has been described in a paper in the European Journal of Human Genetics.

The impact of COVID-19 will be explored through an epidemiological study on 24,000 Catalan volunteers
The COVICAT aims to evaluate the evolution of incidences of infection by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 in the Catalan population during 12 months through a prospective epidemiological study of populational cohorts established before the pandemic. The study is being carried out with 24,000 people who volunteered and who are already members of different populational cohorts in a collaboration between the GCAT Genomes for Life Project of the IGTP and two research groups from ISGlobal and the Hospital Clínic, Barcelona.

GCAT Health and Environment study starts
Today we have started the GCAT Health and Environment study to understand how the environment impacts to our health. The IGTP, together with ISGlobal and GCAT volunteers, starting with the GCAT project team of scientists, have begun to monitor in the GCAT cohort the air quality, physical activity, sleep quality, noise, light, the proximity to transit areas and access to green areas, among others, to which we are exposed in our day to day.

GCAT and the Regulatory Genomics Group at the IGTP-IJC have developed a new method to make checking whether samples that have had RNA
GCAT and the Regulatory Genomics Group at the IGTP-IJC have developed a new method to make checking whether samples that have had RNA sequenced are from related individuals. They have shown that it can be used on large data sets of RNA sequencing information to check if samples are from related individuals or not, or to reconstruct family trees.

Application of genomic disease risk profiling for the optimization of current Cancer Screening Programs
GCAT joined the European Colon cancer experts at the 2nd TRANSCOLONCAN COST Action meeting, at SKopja, North Macedonia, focused on intratumor heterogeneity (ITH) and single cell genomics applied to a tumor profiling.
